Few things are as frustrating as stepping into an unexpectedly cold shower. When the water heater breaks down, the first question many homeowners wonders is, “Is it still under warranty?” After all, a warranty can be the difference between a free water heater repair and a sizeable dent in the wallet.

As assuring as warranties can be, they also come with rules, limitations, and fine print that many people overlook. In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we break it down so you know what to expect – and what to do if you’re no longer covered.

About water heater warranties

Water heater warranties are often advertised as a guarantee of longevity and reliability. Most standard water heaters come with warranties of 6 years or more depending on the model and manufacturer. Tankless water heaters often offer warranties of 10 years or more due to their more durable design.

With that said, there are two types of warranties to recognize:

  1. Manufacturer Warranties: These are provided by the company that made the water heater and typically cover defects in materials or workmanship.
  2. Extended Warranties or Service Plans: These might be offered by the retailer or an installer for an additional fee. They can cover repairs or replacement beyond the manufacturer’s coverage.

Although warranties are designed to offer peace of mind, they come with some caveats. For instance, manufacturer warranties typically only cover parts. This means you’ll still have to pay for labor costs.

Is the water heater still covered by the warranty?

Determining whether your water heater is under warranty can feel like a detective’s job, but it’s easier than you think. Follow these steps:

  1. Find the Serial Number: The serial number is usually located on a sticker or plate on the water heater itself. It’s a combination of letters and numbers that, surprisingly, indicates your water heater’s age. For many brands, the first two numbers in the serial number represent the year the unit was manufactured.
  2. Review the Warranty Documentation: Sometimes, warranty details come with the water heater and might be tucked away in your files. If not, you can often find a copy on the manufacturer’s website by searching for your model number.
  3. Check for Registration Requirements: Some manufacturers require you to register your water heater within a certain time frame after purchase to activate the warranty. If you skipped this step, your warranty may not be valid.

What warranties cover, and what they don’t

It’s important to understand the limitations of a water heater warranty to avoid unexpected surprises. Most warranties cover the cost of defective parts (such as the tank or heating elements). If there’s an issue with the design or materials, the warranty should kick in.

What’s typically NOT covered are labor costs, damage from neglect, and improper installations. This is why hiring a trained plumber in Anna, TX and performing periodic plumbing service is so important!

What if the warranty has expired?

If your water heater is no longer under warranty, then the cost of repairs is something to worry about. Depending on the problem, it might make more sense to replace the water heater than repair it. Typically, we recommend a replacement if the cost of repairs exceeds half the price of a new unit.

If your water heater is old, inefficient, or unreliable, then it may be time to invest in a new unit anyway. Modern water heaters, like a tankless water heater installation, are far more energy-efficient and can save you money in the long run. Plus, you get to start with a fresh new warranty!
